What should I do immediately if I suspect fraud?
Contact Montonio: If you suspect a merchant or online store of fraudulent activity, or notice any suspicious or unauthorized activity related to a payment processed through Montonio on your account, contact Montonio at [email protected] or [email protected] as soon as possible. Provide all available details about the merchant, your order, and the reasons for suspicion. To assist the investigation, share relevant documents such as order confirmation, proof of payment (bank confirmation), and copies of communication with the merchant. Montonio is committed to explaining the purpose of any requested information and acting swiftly upon receiving your report to mitigate potential harm.
Contact Your Financial Institution: If you suspect unauthorised activity on your account or account compromise, contact your financial institution directly using official phone numbers (found on the back of your credit card or on the institution's official website, not numbers provided in suspicious communications).
Credit Bureaus: If your personal information has been compromised, consider placing a fraud alert or freezing your credit with the major credit bureaus.³
Document Everything: Document all details of the suspected fraud, including dates, times, any communication received, and any financial transactions involved.
Where else can I report financial crimes and fraudulent activities?
Reporting fraudulent activities is crucial for both your protection and for assisting law enforcement. Depending on the nature of the fraud, reports can be made to:
Lithuanian Police: For general financial crimes, internet crimes (e.g., hacking, threats, spam), and mail fraud.
Bank of Lithuania ([email protected]): For financial market-related complaints, including investment fraud, and to report illegal financial service providers.
Your Payment Service Provider and Police: If you suspect you've become a money mule, immediately stop any payment transactions instructed by potential criminals and report them to your payment service provider and the police.
Why is it important to report fraud, even if I don't think I'll get my money back?
While regulatory agencies like the Bank of Lithuania may not resolve individual complaints directly, the complaints you file are compiled into extensive databases. Law enforcement agencies use these databases to detect patterns of criminal activity, initiate investigations, and pursue prosecutions against fraudsters. Your report contributes significantly to collective efforts to combat financial crime and protect the wider public.⁶
