Why is the identity verification needed?

Stripe requires identity verification to prevent fraud, streamline risk operations, and increase trust and safety. By verifying the authenticity of ID documents, matching them with selfies, and validating personal information against global databases, Stripe can confirm the identity of users. This helps reduce the number of scammers, prevent fraud losses, streamline KYC processes, and add a layer of security against account takeovers.

Acceptable documentation for identity verification

Below is a listing of documents that Stripe can accept as proof of identity, address, and entity for each country Stripe supports.

  • Government-issued photo ID

  • Passport

  • Driver's license

Some forms of documentation require pictures of both the front and back of the document. For these, use the document_back parameter to provide the back of the document. Unless explicitly noted, only a picture of the front of the document is required.

Stripe only accepts a passport to verify someone’s identity when a Stripe account and an individual associated with that Stripe account (for example, a Business Representative or owner) are from different countries.

What does the identity verification process look like?

1. Notification email

You get an email from us with the subject "Action required - Update business information to continue accepting Card Payments", where we notify you that to continue accepting card payments, you need to provide some additional documents to Stripe.

Here is what the email looks like:

2. Provide the documents

You have two options for how you can provide the needed information:

  1. You can upload documents by clicking the "Upload information" button", which redirects you to Stripe.

  2. You can send the documents to us by answering the email that is shown in the previous step. To see what documents are exactly needed, click on the "Upload information" button".

3. Wait for Stripe to review your information

Whether you or we have submitted the needed information to Stripe, we need to wait for them to review it.

If any additional information is needed, we usually contact you from our side to make this process smoother and faster.
