Payment links are a powerful tool in (online) commerce to make the payment process convenient for the buyers. Payment links can be created through two different mediums:

  • API-created payment links for bulk creation, primarily automated

  • Manually created payment links from Montonio's Partner System

Below you'll see the main use cases for payment links 👇

  1. Attaching payment links to invoices: the most logical way to use payment links. Paying for an invoice should be as easy as possible. By creating and adding a payment link, you save the payer's from the hassle of copying the bank/payment requisites from the .pdf file. The payer can just click on the link, pick their preferred payment method (bank payment, card payment, Google/Apply Pay etc) and just complete the payment

  2. Collecting prepayments/deposits: in order to book/confirm a service or a product, some kind of a deposit or prepayment might be required. This deposit is not a usual item in the online store, rather a one-off payment by the customer. By putting together a payment link and sending it to the customer, it's easy to allow them to make this prepayment

  3. Recovering abandoned shopping carts: Sometimes customers drop off before completing the transaction. Sending them a payment link could be an efficient way to recoup some of those lost orders. According to different studies, abandoned shopping cart emails can lead to 20% of orders being completed

  4. Facilitating a payment that comes from marketplace/social media: Instead of sending the customer the bank requisites as a social media message, it's way easier to just generate a payment link. The customer can complete the purchase within seconds.

  5. Replacing (expensive) POS terminals: this is largely applicable to offline merchants. The main payment channel is a payment terminal that can be quite expensive to use/rent, also the variable charges per each transaction can eat into the margins. Each payment link also has a QR-code that the customer can scan and make the payment seamlessly. A very beneficial payment method for selling at fairs, for example

  6. Convenient upselling: payment links are a great way to upselling products post-purchase. For example, somebody books accommodation in your hotel or cottage. After confirming the purchase, they ask if they can bring their pet. That's might be an extra fee. Or somebody purchases a goods and later discover that they need help with the instalment of the product. Send them a payment link for a certain amount to pay for this extra service.
